Over the years I have found that people are really starting to like the winter months of fishing. The reason for that is you never know whats going to come in on the end of the line. It could be a monster brown trout, striper, or a hybrid.
From Early January all the way through Late April our resident Brown trout have water temperatures that are comfortable for them to roam freely throughout the lake. We are so fortunate on Boone Lake to have some of the best Brown Trout fishing in the area. Dress warm and prepare for a great day of fishing with the our average trout weighing from 5-15lbs, and the chance at a monster over that.
During the winter months please know that with the temperatures being a lot colder I dont mind starting in temps below freezing (32 degrees) but thats only if its gonna warm up above that at some point in the day. I wont fish if its going to stay below freezing , its not comfortable for you either when its like that. Cold temperatures below freezing make everything harder on the lake. So get your winter gear out and book with me for a chance at catching some of these beautiful brown trout.
During the other months of the year our lake temperatures warm up and send all our Brown trout down to the deeper waters. Our resident striper start their spawing run upstream in the springtime. They are 10-20% heavier prespawn and thats the best chance to catch a monster. This window of opportunity only last a month or less becase they go upstream to spawn in mass numbers, so time is limited but the reward can be great.
Fall fishing is great and lasts from Late September all the way through December. When they begin the lake drawdown the generation from the two rivers above us, Watauga river, and South Holston River, pushes these striper down and out into the lake where we wait and intercept them with some live bait. These months can be rewarding for some monsters and numbers of quality fish.
